Always Act like A Leader

Whether we realize it or not, every one of us is a leader in some way: in our families, workplaces or communities. Whether your goal is to make money, create great art or contribute to your community, each of us benefits from developing leadership skills.

I believe great leaders have these four significant qualities:

They Are Great Communicators. Both internally (self-talk) and externally with those around them. They communicate in a way that inspires action and the achievement of big goals while encouraging others to excel.

They Are Dependable. Great leaders build trust over time by consistently delivering what they promise. They show the way forward by committing and then meeting that commitment, every time!

They Are Results-Oriented. The overarching goal of a leader is to achieve something important and meaningful, something that creates value and helps the world become a better place.

They Are Persons of Character. However they show it, leaders are first and foremost good people. If you trust their leadership, you should also be able to trust them without question.

To develop the habit of acting like a leader, do the following:

  • Actively seek out any leadership positions where you can develop and practice your skills.
  • Take some formal leadership training courses.
  • Seek out a more experienced leader who can give you tips and suggestions on how to improve.
  • Never refuse a challenging assignment. It builds leadership skills, and you might be surprised to find how much of a leader you already are.
  • Seek the road less traveled, as it will provide resistance and build stronger leadership muscles.
  • Focus on transferable people skills that can be moved from one sector, company and situation to another.
  • Never quit!
